“While obtaining up-to-date and representative data on IDPs is a challenge in most contexts, urban settings pose particular operational, political and technical constraints.” However, careful planning, flexible methodologies, bringing partners together under one transparent process, and incorporating a deep understanding of the urban context – all these elements can help overcome these challenges.
This background paper, authored by JIPS and annexed to IDMC’ Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID) 2019, zooms in on displacement profiling in urban areas. It focuses on the technical side of the collaborative data collection process, and in particular on how to tackle some of the main methodological issues of analysing internal displacement in urban settings, illustrated through three recent profiling exercises.
